I have been collecting ephemera that examines how language and imagery shape our perceptions of masculinity. This collection aims to explore how both can act as tools for connection or manipulation, especially in contexts of deception and misinformation. It specifically addresses how societal misconceptions about boyhood—such as rigid expectations for behavior—can influence young minds and perpetuate harmful patterns.
The words and images we select, as well as those imposed on us by others, can cause harm, mislead, and seldom uplift. This project highlights how language can be weaponized, distorting reality and reinforcing damaging notions of identity. While I am uncertain about the outcomes of this collection, my deepening understanding of masculinity and its historical implications drives me to gather materials that will support both my professional scholarship and personal growth.
I am profoundly grateful to the Mississippi Arts Commission for their ongoing support.
